Get an Edge on the Competition

Monday, March 8th, 2010

We have discussed numerous times in the past how competitive the job market is in the sports business field. The name of the game is separating your resume from the other stacks of resumes that a potential employer receives. A step in the right direction to this separation would be to learn a little something about one of the hottest technological trends in the industry. This Saturday Diamond Sports will be presenting a on Sports Media Production and even demonstrating some of their capabilities. Mark Jeffers will be presenting and he has an extensive background NBC and CBS, two networks which host such sporting events as the Olympics, NFL football and the NCAA March Madness tournament. In this presentation you will learn about technological trends, as well as demonstrations of live streaming technology. Live streaming technology made a splash with NBC during the 08 Olympics and has become a major part of sports business. In the next few months, CBS and ESPN will both make a major push by live streaming the NCAA tournament and the World Cup respectively. The internet with it’s live streaming capability allows you to reach any part of the world that has internet capabilities. This has major implications to aspects of the sports business world which will be discussed in the presentation. This information packed presentation will take a small amount of your time but could make a lasting impact on your abilities in your current job or to separate you in a positive light for future endeavors.

Saturday Double Feature

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

I have previously written on the benefits of seminars and workshops for students as well as professionals interested in the world of sports business. This Saturday Diamond Sports is hosting two great seminars back to back.

The first seminar is being presented by one of the top agents in the sports field, Bobby Barad, who will talk about his 20 years of experience being a sports agent. Well before the time of Jerry Maguire, the sports agent field was one of the most popular avenues of the sports business world. Bobby will be speaking about sports industry trends and developments as well as sharing some stories about representing some of the top players in all of sports including former AL rookie of the year Evan Longoria and World Champion second basement Robinson Cano. He will also stick around after for questions from the audience.

The next seminar is less area specific and will be more focused on the dramatically changing face of sports business as a whole. The landscape is shifting drastically with advanced technology and streaming media applications taking a much more active role in everyday business. Diamond Sports has embraced this change and will be showing live demonstrations of their own virtual studio and how it can be adapted to different businesses. This can also be a valuable tool for aspiring students as well as coaches and athletic directors.

For more information and how to register for these events please the upcoming events page of the Diamond Sports website. For more information on the potential benefits of programs and some tips on how to extract the most from them please see my earlier blog post entitled “The value of seminars for students“.

I look forward to seeing you there!

The Value of Seminars and Workshops for Students

Monday, February 1st, 2010

My name is John and I am currently interning at Diamond Sports as part of my pursuit of a Masters in sports business management. One of the greatest benefits I have had since joining the program has been to attend the various seminars and workshops provided by Diamond Sports. Whether it is a panel of executives from top companies in the industry or a program led by Bobby Valentine like the one coming up on February 10th, I have been able to learn valuable information that has helped me with my internship as well as my classes.

The sports business industry is as difficult an industry to find an occupation as you will find in today’s day and age because of the popularity of sports and the increase in colleges which offer the education required to excel in this field. This is why I can’t stress the importance of attending these seminars and workshops while in high school as well as college. Really any students at that level who are interested in sports would both enjoy and benefit from attending. Below is a list of specific reasons high school and college students interested in the sports business world should attend such events.

  1. Its all about networking – At the end of these events the attendees are given the opportunity to stay after, exchange business cards with, or pick the brains of the presenters. These are the people that down the road could be interviewing you or be an integral part in finding you employment in the industry. Meet these people, stay in touch with them. This will be a great way to separate you from the other thousands of applicants companies such as ESPN or the New York Yankees receive.
  2. Learn the industry – Listen and ask questions. You can bet whomever the speaker is has a wealth of knowledge based on their years of experience doing what they do. Learn from their mistakes, and jot down what worked for them on their path to success. Who knows these could be lessons that could prove important to you in any type of industry.
  3. Future Trends - Even if you do not plan on entering the work force for five or more years you can still get a leg up on the competition. These speakers have a way of seeing industry trends and having an idea of what is going to be important next. For instance, if you learned about social networking three years ago and mastered it on your own then you would have had an easier time finding a job this past year than those who were trying to catch up.
  4. Strength in Numbers – Come with your friends, your teammates or just your family. A lot of the speakers in one way or another reference team work and speak about how important it is to success. Use these events as a building block for your own team or your own family to work better as a unit with the same common goal.
  5. Bolster your Interview – I can speak from experience on this one that certain quotes I hear from these events I memorize and bring them up when I go on interviews. This shows the person who is interviewing you that you really did your research and you are interested enough in this industry to take time out of your busy day and sit and listen to a legend like Bobby Valentine speak. It also shows that you are eager to learn new things, which may seem like a small trait but not to a person looking to hire.

These are only a few of the many benefits high school and college students can get out of attending Diamond Sports events. Stay tuned for updates on upcoming seminars, reviews of past seminars and more information useful to those looking for an occupation in the sports business industry.

New Happenings

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

New things have been going on since my last post. I’ve worked with people such as Kevin Hallinan, a former SVP of Major League Baseball and Bobby Barad who represents major league baseball players. It’s been a great experience to work with such great people in the industry I hope to be a part of. I’ve produced my own virtual resume which I hope to use to my advantage in gaining employment down the road. I’m excited for the upcoming event at the Bobby Valentine Academy. I have not been there yet event though I don’t live far from it and I am looking forward to seeing the facility. Hope to see you there!!!!!

My Experience-Student Intern Blog

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

My name is Jason Evans. I am enrolled in the Sports Management Graduate Program at Manhattanville College. I attended an internship workshop that Walter had held at Manhattanville and he told me that Diamond Sports was looking for an intern with my background, so I jumped at the chance. I graduated Manhattanville with a degree in Communications and had done a lot of TV production which is what Diamond Sports was looking for.

Interning at Diamond Sports over the past few weeks has been a great experience. Walter, Mark and Dave have been great to work with and have been a great help when I have needed it. Tonight is the Career event in Mount Kisco where I will help film the event as a part of my internship by using the new Tri-Caster. It’s an amazing piece of video technology that I got trained on and could help me in my career down the road. I also hope to talk with the panelists for the event to gain insight on how they got to where they are and any other useful nuggets that I can pick up.

For more info on the event, look on the main page at DiamondSportsCareers.com. See you there!!!!

New Media Event

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Today is the New Media Event at the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center. I am very excited about the selection of guest speakers who will be there from MLB Productions, NY Giants, ESPN, USA Today, ANC Sports, and SI.com. There is also going to be a demonstration of the NewTek Tricaster from Varto Technologies. With this equipment you can turn your own living room into a production studio. The combination of speakers and the presentation of the NEWTek Tricaster makes this event a “can’t miss” for someone who aspires to work in the sports media world.

Before the event I have to stop by the offices of MLB Productions and NY Giants to pick up some media DVD’s. Wow, I can’t believe I just said that I will be going to the MLB and NY Giants offices. That is something that would not be possible without Diamond Sports! I will blog back later to let everyone know how the event went.

Diamond Sports

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

My name is Doug Davis and I am a recent college graduate who is looking to follow my dreams and one day work in the sports industry. I juggle several part time jobs in order to pay off school loans and other expenses that one encounters once they enter “the real world”. I run a baseball league designed for adults with disabilities called The Miracle League of Westchester, I also referee sports on a part time basis and I have dabbled in coaching pee-wee football. Living in New York, which has been called the “sports capital of the world” can be a tough market in which to find a job, especially in the sports industry. I know that in order to get my foot in the door, I will need as much preparation and insight into the business as possible, that is where Diamond Sports comes in.

Meeting with the career counselors at Diamond Sports Business Education Group has been a very rewarding experience for me. Talking with their career counselors has given me insight into the sports industry in terms of potential job and internship opportunities along with helping me to develop a resume and fine-tune the skills needed to obtain a job in the sports industry.

Since meeting with the career counselors at Diamond Sports (Walter Recher and Dave Torromeo), I have also learned about some of the sports related competitions they have for people who are in a similar position to me and are seeking a job in the sports industry. Twice I have attended ”perfect pitch” competitions in which students and others who are looking to obtain a job in sports have had the opportunity to develop a marketing idea / “perfect pitch” for minor league baseball teams to attract more fans to their stadiums. The winners of the competitions have been qualified to win a $400 gift certificate for textbooks, along with a free counseling session with Walter and Dave and a chance at securing an internship with Diamond Sports. Being someone who has always been involved in community service, I had the idea for local high schools and their athletic teams to perform community service activities that would be promoted at the Bridgeport Bluefish and Hudson Valley Renegades baseball games. In turn, the Bluefish and Renegades could provide discounted tickets to the students to attract new fans to their baseball games. By doing this, not only would the Renegades and Bluefish be able to get new fans into their stadiums to watch baseball games, but the students would also be able to promote their community service events to other fans at the game in order to raise awareness about helping others in their community. It was a win-win situation for all.

Every several weeks Diamond Sports holds career seminars. At these seminars, some of the biggest names in sports come to speak with those looking to obtain a job in the industry and provide advice and insight into the sports business world. Some of the featured speakers have included: Lou Lamoriello, General Manager of the NJ Devils, Kevin Hallinan, former Senior Vice President of Major League Baseball, Peter Ruocco, Senior Vice President of NFL Labor Relations and Jeff Taylor, Senior Director of ESPN. The professionals that I have met through Diamond Sports and the advice and career training they have provided to me as I continue to seek my dream job in the sports industry has been invaluable.

I am still searching for the job of my dreams as I am sure many of you are too. I do not know when that job will come or with what sports organization it will be with. However, what I do know is that the advice and career training provided to me from Walter and Dave, along with the sport professionals I have met through Diamond Sports has helped me develop the tools and confidence I will need to perform to the best of my abilities when my opportunity comes.

I will be continuing to blog on the Diamond Sports website every couple of days and after the career seminars that I attend. I would love to share my thoughts and experiences with any of you who are also seeking a job in sports. Please feel free to add to this blog in order to keep the discussion flowing. Thanks all, I look forward to hearing from you soon.
